Briefing 01 · Information Security
The hidden risk of operating on a .net, .co, country-code, or hyphenated domain
When a company named Apex Industrial operates on apex-industrial.com or apexindustrial.net, external counterparties inevitably send sensitive correspondence to @apexindustrial.com. Security researchers refer to this as default-TLD leakage. Even when the third-party owner of the .com is passive, misdirected messages can expose vendor invoices, customer PII, or executive travel itineraries. Bringing the exact-match .com under your own registrar account lets your IT team publish an explicit SPF/DMARC policy and capture or reject misaddressed mail inside your own tenant.
Briefing 02 · Commercial Valuation
How corporate .com pricing is reasoned
Automated online “domain appraisal” widgets guess prices using character length and consumer keyword volume, which makes them useless for B2B and regional operating domains. At Nordmark Advisory, we price a name against three grounded inputs: (1) the replacement cost of lost direct traffic and brand confusion over a 5-year operating horizon, (2) average contract or customer lifetime value in the specific industry the domain names, and (3) comparable private aftermarket transfers for two- and three-word commercial .com assets.
Briefing 03 · Finance & Tax Treatment
Booking a domain acquisition on the corporate balance sheet
For U.S. operating companies, a domain name acquisition is documented through our standard Bill of Sale, W-9, and Escrow.com closing statement. Depending on your accounting policies and capitalization thresholds under ASC 350 (Intangibles—Goodwill and Other), acquired domain names are typically recorded as capitalized intangible assets or amortized over their useful commercial life. We provide clean counterparty documentation so your controller and external auditors have a complete paper trail.
Briefing 04 · Technical Operations
How to transfer a live domain with zero downtime
A common misconception among non-technical executives is that transferring a domain takes a website offline for days. In reality, an intra-registrar account push (for example, Cloudflare-to-Cloudflare or GoDaddy-to-GoDaddy) completes in under ten minutes, and a cross-registrar EPP transfer keeps existing DNS records resolving continuously throughout the transfer window. We coordinate directly with your IT lead or managed service provider at no extra fee.
